A theft crime is a criminal act that is committed when one person takes or steals another person’s property without the consent of that person. A property crime is crime that is committed when a person damages or destroys another person’s property. Both theft crimes and property crimes may be categorized as misdemeanors or felonies. Classification will generally depend upon the offender’s criminal history, the type of crime committed and the extent of the damage.
In Texas, commonly committed theft and property crimes include, but are not limited to: robbery, burglary, petty theft, shoplifting, carjacking, identify theft, fraud, forgery, possession of stolen property, vandalism, arson, destruction of property and trespassing.
